05-10-2010 01.06 ILB and ALB
Both boats were requested to launch shortly after 1am after reports of a fire on Hastings pier with possibly persons trapped on the structure. ILB was quickly on scene and commenced a search around the pier to firstly look for potential casualties, and then, when it was confirmed that there were no persons in the vicinity, to report on the current state of the fire.
Once the ALB was alongside, it was requested that the ILB go ashore to collect a member of the Hastings Fire and Rescue Service so they could asess the situation around the head of the pier where the fire seemed to be concentrated. Once he had carried out his assessment, the decision was made to call in the specialist marine firefighting team which could work from the ALB. ILB crews collected the neccessary pumping equipment from shore and carried to the ALB in readiness for the firefighters to commence their operation.
Unfortunately the blaze was very severe and the structure suffered substantial damage as has been widely reported. When fire crews had completed the afloat tasks, both boats were stood down to return to station, at approximately 06.30.
