The lifeboat launched after Dover Coastguard had received reports from the car-transporter ‘City of Rome’ that they had a crewman on board who had fallen ill. It was agreed that the Hastings lifeboat would rendezvous with the ship and the two boats eventually met over 10 miles off Hastings.
The Coastguard helicopter was put on standby while the lifeboat transferred two volunteer crewmembers on board the ship to assess the casualty. The Croatian seaman complained of severe stomach pains, he was stabilised and it was then felt that the best course of action would be to transfer him to hospital via the lifeboat.
The seaman was helped down onto the lifeboat before the forty-minute passage back to Hastings, where he was safely handed over to the care of paramedics on the beach, and taken to the Conquest hospital.
Hastings RNLI lifeboat Coxswain Steve Warne, said: ‘It’s the second time in a week that we’ve been called to similar situations, an injured crew of commercial vessels needing help. It just goes to show how unpredictable lifeboating is; it can be quiet and then two jobs like this come along back to back.”

12-03-2009 17.52 ALB

The lifeboat launched after Dover Coastguard received reports of a crewman aboard the KG1 from Rye had injured his ankle. The lifeboat was alongside the casualty within fifteen minutes of leaving the beach.
Two of the volunteer crew, Sloane Phillips and Becky Sullivan, who work as paramedics in Hastings were put on board the fishing boat to assess the casualty. They stabilised the fisherman’s ankle and he was then transferred to the lifeboat. Ambulance crew met the lifeboat when it returned to Hastings and the fisherman was taken to the Conquest hospital.
It was the first emergency call for new Hastings RNLI lifeboat Coxswain Steve Warne, he said: ‘Transferring an injured casualty in rough seas is always difficult. We are lucky to have such well-trained volunteers on the crew here at Hastings. It means that we can do jobs like these both quickly and safely.”

27-02-2009 18.35 ILB and ALB

ILB crew paged after 2 persons reported to the Coastguard that they were stuck beneath the cliffs at Fairlight. Once on scene, the ILB commenced a search while staying in contact with Dover coastguard as they had the individuals on the phone.
Once the position was ascertained, one crew member was put ashore to assess possible evacuation routes. When it became clear that there was no easy way down, and with the casualties becoming anxious, the ILB collected 2 members of the coastguard cliff team and landed them at the scene for their assessment. The ALB was launchae at this point to ensure the area could stay well lit.
The cliff team confirmed that there would be no way to reach the casualties from above due to dense undergrowth, and as it was too dangerous to guide them down the loose cliff face it was decided helicopter evacuation was the only way. This was tasked from Lee on Solent, arriving at approximately 20.55 to commence the recovery. The casualties were taken to the cliff top where an ambulance and the Hastings Coastguard team were waiting, after which they were taken to the Conquest Hospital for a checkover. The Helicopter then recovered the Coastguard and RNLI personnel still on the cliffs.
