Hastings Crew to awarded for Bravery

RNLI Helmsman Simon Hodgson (38) of Hastings lifeboat station is to be awarded the Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellum for his skilled seamanship and unwavering efforts to rescue a swimmer on 26 November 2006.

. In difficult conditions with a heavy dumping swell directly on the beach, Helmsman Simon Hodgson used his considerable experience to launch the lifeboat into the rough seas, powering the lifeboat forward at the right moment to prevent the lifeboat being beached while attempting to reach the swimmer. Helmsman Hodgson had to alter course frequently to meet the larger waves head on to avoid capsize.

Radio communication throughout the service was extremely difficult due to the severe conditions. However, during broken discussions with the Coastguard, the lifeboat crew were able to pinpoint the location of the man who was reportedly visible from the beach. Just six minutes after launch the lifeboat arrived on scene, however the casualty was located face down in the water. Several attempts had to be made to recover him, and Simon Hodgson had to leave the helm temporarily to help get him on board.

.Helmsman Hodgson also took part in attempts to resuscitate the man when they had reached the beach but unfortunately, despite everyone’s best attempts including those of the Coastguard and ambulance crews the casualty died.

RNLI Deputy Divisional Inspector East, Allen Head comments on the award:

‘This service was conducted in very difficult conditions at the maximum of the D class lifeboat’s operating limits. Helmsman Hodgson demonstrated sound helmsmanship throughout, and despite the sad outcome to this service, all three crew contributed a great deal towards locating and recovering the swimmer. Crew Member Phillips used all of her medical experience to give the casualty the very best chance of survival.

‘Had they not launched, he would have stood no chance at all. No effort was spared to save him. The man was a regular swimmer in the sea at Hastings and his death was a sad loss.’

For their part in the rescue Crew Members Glenn Barry (32) and Sloane Phillips (32) each receive a Vellum Service Certificate signed by the Chairman of the Institution, Admiral Sir Jock Slater.

Allen Head continues:

‘The coastguard rescue team, ably lead by Station Officer Bud White, also played a pivotal role in this service. Their assistance throughout the recovery phase was invaluable. This sound and effective teamwork contributed a great deal towards offering the man the very best chance of survival.’

For his invaluable assistance with the rescue, Station Officer Bud White HM Coastguard Hastings, will receive a Letter of Appreciation signed by the RNLI Operations Director, Michael Vlasto.
